Preseason is finally over and Bayern Munich can get back to the business of winning games (and hopefully, trophies) again.
The DFB Pokal is the one competition that has been the bane of this team since the 2020 treble, with three separate coaches managing to crash out in increasingly embarrassing ways.
This time, it’ll be Vincent Kompany’s turn. He’s up against SSV Ulm, who have started poorly in the 2.Bundesliga this year.
In normal circumstances a win here would usually be taken for granted, but the players only just finished preseason and several key members of the squad (Harry Kane, João Palhinha, and Alphonso Davies) have yet to achieve full fitness. It’s also the coach’s first competitive game in charge of Bayern Munich. That’s what makes this whole thing tricky.
Therefore, Kompany is probably going to rely on the players he used against Tottenham Hotspur — guys like Serge Gnabry, Thomas Müller, Jamal Musiala, and Mathys Tel — to bring home the win. Will he get off to a winning start? Or will last year’s demons reveal themselves once again?
