Austria will battle Turkey in the round of 16

It takes something special to get out of the group with France and the Netherlands as the winner of the section.

This is exactly what Austria have achieved despite losing the opener to Les Bleus. They have been rewarded with a favourable knockout-phase draw.

Austria will battle Turkey in the round of 16 on Tuesday evening at Leipzig Stadium.

  • Austria bagged three goals in each of the last two matches at the Euro.
  • Turkey have conceded at least a goal in four consecutive outings across competitions.
  • Austria demolished Turkey 6-1 in a friendly in March this year.
  • We’ve seen at least three goals in each of Turkey’s last four matches.

Austria have been one of the most positive surprises of the 2024 Euro so far. They have managed back-to-back wins over Poland and the Netherlands after a narrow opening day loss to France.

Ralf Rangnick’s men showed character when it mattered most, beating Oranje 3-2 on the final day of the group stage to take the top of the section.

Turkey also delivered a strong performance when they needed it, beating the Czech Republic 2-1 on Wednesday evening.

Cenk Tosun was the team’s hero, netting the super-late stoppage-time winner against ten-man Czechs on the occasion.

Austria vs Turkey Predicted Lineups and Team News

Ralf Rangnick should not make changes to the team that dispatched the Netherlands on Tuesday.

He will need to replace right midfielder Patrick Wimmer through suspension. He has a very strong replacement in the like of Christoph Baumgartner who was fabulous in the 3-1 win over Poland in the second round.

Turkish manager Vincenzo Montella has many more problems with his squad ahead of this game.

Turkey will be without their main star Hakan Calhanoglu as well as centre-back Samet Akaydin. They are both suspended after getting multiple yellow cards in the group phase.

Orkun Kokcu is the perfect candidate to replace Calhanoglu while Abdulkerim Bardakci should deputise for Akaydin in the back line.

Austria (4-5-1): Pentz – Posch, Wober, Lienhart, Prass – Baumgartner, Sabitzer, Schmid – Arnautovic

Turkey (4-5-1): Gunok – Muldur, Bardakci, Demiral, Kadioglu – Yuksek, Ozcan, Guler, Kokcu, Yildiz – Yilmaz.
