The men’s soccer tournament at the 2024 Paris Olympics is nearing its climax, with Monday featuring two semifinals at iconic French soccer stadiums
First, one of the world’s traditional powers will face off with a neighbor whose reputation in the sport is growing rapidly. Spain, whose full national team triumphed this summer at Euro 2024, is looking to repeat the feat with its Olympic team. To do so, a win over Morocco — who looked like a true gold medal contender in dismantling the United States 4-0 in the quarterfinal round — will be required.
The second match of the day will see the host nation France take on an Egypt side that has emerged as a potential Cinderella team at these Summer Olympics.
France, coached by national team legend Thierry Henry, has not quite hit the heights expected as a pre-tournament favorite, but still has the talent to claim gold in Paris.
Egypt established its credentials by beating Spain in the group stage, and these two teams are the only unbeaten teams left in the men’s soccer tournament.
Morocco is sure to get plenty of support at Marseille’s Stade Vélodrome, while a pro-France crowd is expected to pack Parc Olympique Lyonnais for the second semifinal.
