Of all four Champions League quarter-finals, this might just be the most evenly matched.
The bookies certainly think so. Bayern Munich are favourites to go through, but not by much. You can get odds of 4/5 on the German champions reaching the semis, with Inter slight underdogs at 11/10.
Both teams are well positioned in their domestic title races, even if Inter are not sitting quite as pretty as Bayern.
The Nerazzurri hold a four-point advantage over Napoli in Serie A, but Antonio Conte’s side have a game in hand at the time of writing (they face Bologna on Monday).
Bayern’s six-point lead over Bayer Leverkusen feels more comfortable, although Vincent Kompany’s team take on Borussia Dortmund in a potential banana skin of a fixture this weekend.
The Bundesliga and Serie A titles remain the priority for this pair, but having reached the quarter-finals Bayern and Inter are determined to go all the way in the Champions League too.
There is more pressure on Bayern. They last won the tournament in 2019/20 under Hansi Flick, who is now attempting to repeat the feat with Barcelona.
The Deloitte Money League lists Bayern as the fifth-highest club in the world for revenue generation, with Inter nine places lower in 14th. Simone Inzaghi’s charges should not be underestimated, however. They were runners-up two seasons ago and gave Manchester City a stern examination in that final.
Bayern were not overly convincing in the inaugural league phase, winning five and losing three of their eight matches. They only just squeezed past Celtic in the play-offs, but a more impressive 5-0 aggregate defeat of Bayer Leverkusen followed in the last 16.
As for Inter, they finished fourth in the league phase. Only Liverpool picked up more points and no one conceded as few goals: their backline was breached just once in 720 minutes of football. The Italian giants then eased past Feyenoord in the previous round, winning 4-1 over two legs.
“It will be tricky,” Inzaghi said of Inter’s next opponents. “I’ve faced them with Inter and already with Lazio, and they’re solid. We’ll play the way we’ve already done so far, putting everything we have into it.”

Given there is little to choose between these two teams, the draw looks overpriced at odds of 5/2.
Bayern Munich will hope that home advantage works in their favour in Tuesday’s first leg. They have not lost any of their last 22 European games at the Allianz Arena dating back to 2021.
On the other hand, the Bundesliga outfit will be without seven first-teamers here, with Jamal Musiala joining the likes of Manuel Neuer, Alphonso Davies and Dayot Upamecano on the treatment table.
As evidenced by their defensive record in the league phase, Inter are a tough nut to crack. They also pose a threat going forward, having scored 69 goals in 31 league games.
It is hard to see Bayern losing in front of their own fans at the Allianz. Yet Inter also have what it takes to avoid defeat.
