The Inter Miami coach is keen to continue to build momentum for Messi and his side and believes more minutes for the Argentine superstar will only be beneficial. The Herons celebrated winning the MLS Supporter’s Shield on Wednesday night, but their season is far from over. With Martino eyeing a points record, Messi is not due a rest anytime soon.
Speaking ahead of the clash with Toronto, Martino said: “We understand that accumulating minutes is putting him in rhythm and that is happening, it is not a question of him accumulating fatigue.”
With the MLS Supporters’ Shield, Lionel Messi lifted his 46th trophy of his esteemed career. However, this marks just the first of his and Inter Miami’s goals for the season. They have two games of the regular season left before the playoffs and the Herons are chasing a double which they can claim if they win the MLS Cup.
Messi will be on the hunt for yet more silverware as he dreams of propelling Inter Miami to a double. They could also break the New England Revolution’s points record set in 2021 should they win their final two games of the season against Toronto and the Revs. They are five points off the total of 73 and cannot afford to drop any points if they want to break it.
